What is Alopecia Areata?
Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune based condition that happens when the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing patch-like hair loss. While hair can be lost from any part of the body, alopecia areata more so affects the head and face. Hair loss is typical in small, round patches about the size of a five pence, but in some cases, hair loss is more extensive. It is also thought that inflammation is also a contributing factor.

Alopecia Areata form an Autoimmune Perspective
At its core, alopecia areata is an autoimmune. Under normal conditions, hair follicles are considered immune protected sites. This meaning that they are protected against inflammatory damage during the active hair growth stage. However, in alopecia areata, this immune protection is disturbed, meaning that immune cells then recognise follicular antigens as targets. This then causes a T-Cell mediated attack. The HLA gene variants are more prone.
Alopecia Areata form an Autoimmune Perspective
While alopecia areata is driven by an autoimmune response, the resulting inflammatory cascade plays a key tole in sustaining and worsening the condition. This is why we can effectively treat mild to moderate cases with biological and anti-inflammatory interventions, instead of immunosuppression.
TREATMENT FOR ALOPECIA AREATA
Conservatively, you treat AA with regaining a good healthy lifestyle - reducing stress, eating well and exercise. Clinical treatment can consist of 2 main options - PRP injections or steroid injections.
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection treatment for Alopecia Areata
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has become a newer method for the treatment of various types of alopecia and is an extremely popular form of treatment in hair restoration for both men and women. PRP treatment is a natural biological treatment that uses blood platelets to supress location inflammation at alopecia sites. PRP therapy is a simple and safe injection treatment with great clinical outcomes and high overall patient satisfaction. Further information can be found here. PRP therapy for hair loss.
Steroid injections (anti-inflammatory) treatment for Alopecia Areata

Steroid is again another common treatment for AA. However, it can carry more side effects than PRP. PRP treatment has been shown to have the same benefit, but is better longer term and has minimal side effects.
Objectively, the aim of treatment for AA is to stabilise, slow progression, regrow lost hair and to prevent recurrence. Small patches are often managed successfully and fast. Whereas, the more severe the condition, the more difficult it can be to treat. It is extremely important to catch it early and treat it early.
PLEASE NOTE: Severe cases of alopecia areata are very complex and far more difficult to treat. These are known as alopecia universalis and alopecia totalis. For moderate to severe cases, in some occasions they can be treated with immunosuppression rather than injection therapy.
WHAT IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE TREATMENT FOR ALOPECIA AREATA?

TREATMENT WILL OBVIOUSLY DEPEND ON SEVERITY OF THE CONDITION. IN VERY SEVERE CASES, THESE MAY BE DIFFICULT TO TREAT. WITH SEVERE CASES, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO MANAGE EXPECTATIONS.
A consultation will help, ascertain the history and severity of the condition, and to see what be the best and safest method to treatment.
