KNEE MENISCUS INJURY TREATMENT BIRMINGHAMUK

Meniscus injuries are extremely common knee injuries, and the correct treatment is fundamentally important for the overall knee joint health. Our very experienced clinicians have been treating knee pain and injury for over 15 years and have gained an excellent reputation in this very complex common area. It is our primary objective to reduce knee painspeed up recovery, improve knee function, slow the progression of cartilage degradation and get people back to their normal daily activities and occupation as soon as possible without causing further trauma that can ultimately lead to increased degenerative changes.

Common causes of meniscus injury

Meniscus injuries are very common in sport and normal daily activities. It is often due to trauma, more specifically, when the foot is planted and there is excessive knee twisting. This then can cause over compression and consequently cause a tearing, which can be graded from mild to severe. Other causes involve accidents/trauma, knee instability and genetic predisposition. A meniscus tear will often lead to increased pain, weakness and swelling. It is very important to get treated straight away to speed up recovery and reduce progressive degenerative changes of the joint cartilage.

Symptoms of meniscus injury

  • Stiffness

  • Pain

  • Swelling

  • Difficulty walking and climbing

  • Giving way

  • Weakness

  • Instability

It is important to be aware of more inflammatory causes of knee pain, like inflammatory arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis...). Other important symptoms to be aware of are prolonged morning joint stiffness, increased swelling, multiple joint pain/swelling, fever, altered sensation or tingling down the leg, ongoing cramps in the legs,  fatigue, weight loss and night pain.

MENISCUS INJURY TREATMENT

Knee meniscus injury treatment will always depend on the severity of the tear. In the initial acute stages, RICE principles are always used - rest, ice, compression and elevation. Mild tearing can often be managed conservatively with appropriate rehabilitative strengthening and stabilisation work. The knee heavily relies on the meniscus for load distribution and congruency. Certain stubborn cases may respond well to injection therapies, like PRP therapy, to speed up repair and healing. We know that knee meniscus can often be a challenge to treat as they do not get any blood supply, they have to rely on nutrients and healing cells from the synovial joint fluid. This is why surgical removal/repair is so often carried out on the knee meniscus, especially in severe tears, where the joint is compromised. Where instability is apparent, a knee brace may be recommended.

CONSERVATIVE THERAPY

  • Osteopathy/manipulation (manual therapy)

  • Physiotherapy (physical therapy)

  • Rehabilitation

  • Postural correction

  • Biomechanics

KNEE INJECTION THERAPY

  • Knee joint injection

  • Knee joint aspiration (fluid drain)

  • Anti-inflammatory injection

REGENERATIVE INJECTION THERAPY

  • PRP injection therapy

  • Stem cell therapy

  • Prolotherapy

  • Hyaluronic acid injection  (joint lubricant)

Knee meniscus injury can range in severity. Ultimately, the aim is to reduce pain and speed up recovery. At the Dynamic Clinic, meniscus injuries are very common complaints we see. We always relay to every patient the importance of treating knee injuries early, to avoid further complications, like joint cartilage issues.

Where possible, we like to enforce conservative treatment and management of mild to moderate injuries, but in certain cases, extra resources are needed and encouraged. If patients are showing signs of advanced injury, then we may discuss the option for an MRI scanning, to get diagnostic clarity of the severity and to see if surgical intervention may be required.

If surgical intervention is not required and the injury is not quite responding to physiotherapy, then we may recommend the use of PRP therapy, which is quite often used to promote healing of damaged tissues. We have built ourselves a very good reputation of delivering high quality regenerative treatments for knee pain and injury. The most popular by far being P-PRP injection treatment, in which patients travel from all over the UK to see us for treatment (further information can be found on the ORTHOBIOLOGICS link below).

Specialist Imaging referral or Private MRI Scans

At the Dynamic Clinic, we can provide ultrasound imaging to look for signs of tissue damage and inflammation. However, the knee joint can require a more in-depth analysis using an MRI. If a private MRI scan is considered, we will put in a local referral to our Imaging Centre in Solihull. You will then be booked in within 5-10 days. Following your scan, the report will be completed by our colleague Dr David Beale (Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist). This report will then come back to the Dynamic Clinic and will we then discuss with you the best course of treatment for your complaint.

In cases where the injury is severe, then we may refer to our trusted colleagues Mr Jamie Arbuthnot (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) or Prof Martin Snow (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) for surgical opinion on repair or removal.

Knee Pain and Meniscus Injury Assessment

To help with your knee injury, firstly need to provide a basic functional assessment to check for severity. If you have been having a knee injury which is not improving or is impacting on your function, it is recommended to see a musculoskeletal professional. Here, they will carry out an assessment, gain information to make a diagnosis and provide the best treatment and management strategies to treat the injury and get you back to best function again. At the Dynamic Clinic, knee pain and injury is one of the most common issues we see many times every day. Our experienced musculoskeletal clinician, Mr Adam Whatley, will be able to provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of knee pain conditions from sport injuries to osteoarthritis.
