What are Dermal Fillers?

From the age of 25, the body decreases in the natural producing collagen and elastin, as a result we loss skin tone. This along with free radical damage causing skin ageing; fine lines and wrinkles, sunken cheeks and a loss of skin elasticity.

Dermal fillers are easy to perform injections that are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that attracts and binds water in the skin. Dermal filler treatment is used to provide and restore volume in to aim to effectively smooth out wrinkles and fines, helping to give your skin a more full and youthful appearance.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers effectively restore lost volume which helps smooth wrinkles and enhance definition. Treatments can range from deep to superficial, like plumping or removing lines or enhancing cheeks. Important to remember that dermal filler is very different Botox. Botox is used as a muscle relaxant and prevents movement of the small muscles that contribute to skin wrinkles. Here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine we do also now offer Botox (ant-wrinkle treatment). Furthermore, the combination of using platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment alongside fillers can be very beneficial and provide outstanding results.

Where are dermal fillers used?

Dermal fillers can be used to achieve a variety of results in different areas of the face. They are usually used in the locations below:

Eyes area: To reduce under eye bags and the appearance of dark circles. Also, used to treat fine lines.

Mid Face Area: Smooth accordion lines (the fine lines that creep up the sides of the face towards the cheekbones) and folds. Also, used to add volume to sunken cheeks affected by gravity as collagen becomes less elastic.

Mouth region: Smooth out line above the lips. Reduce the appearance of vertical lines above the lip Add volume to the nasolabial folds around the mouth. Also used to correct the downturned corners of the mouth, and  Stop the jawline from sagging, alongside plumping and reduce chin creases.

How long can dermal fillers last?

Dermal fillers can last anywhere between 6 to 18 months depending on which product is used. We tend to use Juvederm® and Restylane®.

Before your treatment

Dermal fillers are safe, and allergic reactions are rare, so long as your treatment is carried out by a specially trained professional. Before getting dermal filler treatment there are a few simple steps you can carry out to ensure success.

Reduce blood thinners like aspirin (Unless prescribed), vitamin Enand any dietary supplements that include ginko, garlic, primrose oil and ginseng for 1 weeks prior to your treatment. Also, avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen, also, Aleve, fish oil, alcohol and any product that can thin your blood for 2 days prior to your treatment.

Do dermal fillers have side affects?

Local side effects in and around the treated area may include:

Redness

Swelling

Bruising

Mild discomfort

How to help minimise any side effects of your dermal filler treatment?

Using a calming agent like arnica can help to reduce the skin redness, swelling, tenderness, and/or itchiness after dermal filler treatment. These will also be applied here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine.

Bruising can happen in some but is short lived. To help speed up the process you can use Arnica again to help reduce bruising and swelling. DO NOT massage the treated areas as this can cause the filler to move, resulting in an uneven look and feel. Avoid applying heat to the treated area until any bruising or swelling has gone away. You should also try and avoid any activities that might cause you to blush or get red faced. Exercising, consuming alcohol, going in the sauna or using a sun bed should all be avoided. Regular washing and showering is fine as long as you’re using gentle cleansers and moisturisers. Makeup and sunscreen should also be fine to use as long as they are applied gently.

Is dermal filler treatment right for you?

It is important to do your research and think about what you want to achieve from the treatment.
