PRF: The Next Generation of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Birmingham

The Next Generation of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Birmingham

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is growing hugely in popular demand, commonly used within orthopaedic medicine and cosmetic aesthetics. Over the past decade platelet rich plasma treatment has grown substantially - treating many cases of pain and injury and also it is being used to rejuvenate the skin in "vampire facials", in addition to actively treating hair loss and wound healing.

Now, PRP treatment has taken another leap forward this being – platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) or platelet-rich fibrin matrix, which could be the next generation of the treatment.

So what is the difference between standard platelet rich plasma (PRP) and platelet rich fibrin (PRF)?

Fibrin is a biological scaffold that forms in response to tissue injury. Circulating platelets will bind to a scaffold of fibrin, and when this happens the platelets them become activated and release their all important growth factors. These growth factors then start the healing process by creating new skin cells, which will be the production of new collagen and blood vessels. What we do here at Dynamic Regenerative Medicine is take a small sample your blood, spin it in a centrifuge, operate and isolate the contents, and then extract platelets. We create a platelet and white blood cell rich fibrin scaffold ready for use in treatment. The platelet-rich fibrin has been used in many areas of anti ageing aesthetics and hair restoration.

Process is very similar to PRP however, there's one key difference that could make PRF a more effective treatment in future treatments and that is that it releases the bioactive growth factors over time, which means it could have longer-term benefits. It is these growth factors that are what stimulate the stem cells that produce new collagen and elastin in the skin. Or for hair restoration, it is these growth factors that stimulate hair follicles. In addition, platelets in PRF are thought to survive better than those in PRP, and therefore promote more effective results. Furthermore, it has been found to be very safe.
