Have you been suffering with chronic low back pain? One of the main contributing factors towards this is chronic inflammation associated with facet joint inflammation and degeneration. Facet joints are the joints at the back of the spine that facilitate movement. Easily, these are susceptible to pain, injury and degeneration leading to spinal arthritis. One of the main ways to manage facet joint inflammation conservatively is via appropriate spinal rehabilitation (mobilisation exercises and strengthening exercises). In some cases chronic cases can be managed with injection therapy.
Chronic low back pain, specifically in relation to joint inflammation and degenerative changes leading to osteoarthritis is an extremely common complaint we see here at our Birmingham back pain clinics.
The below recent December 2024 triple blinded study looks to compare efficacy of intra-articular injection of Platelet Rich Plasma
(PRP) with corticosteroids (CS) in patients with chronic facet (zygapophyseal) joint low back pain confirmed by double intra-articular diagnostic blocks. This is a triple-blinded randomised multicentric controlled trial from the journal of interventional pain medicine with a 6-month follow-up.
This study concluded that of the first triple-blinded multicentric RCT, and demonstrates the safety of PRP facet joint injections and its superiority in improving pain and function at six months post-treatment compared to steroid injection for patients with chronic facet joint inflammation and joint osteoarthritis leading to chronic cases of lower back pain.
