Estimated Time to Maximum Medical Improvement of Joint Injections in the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis - A Systematic Review.
The purpose of this review of current literature is to evaluate maximum medical improvement and minimal clinically important difference of different injection therapies in the treatment of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.
Overall, 79 studies were evaluated, with a total of 8,761 patients. Injection therapy treatment consisted of - Corticosteroid injections, hyaluronic acid, and leukocyte-rich platelet rich plasma (LR-PRP) injections. All treatments reached their maximum pain control for knee osteoarthritis at 4-6 weeks post injection treatment. PRP infection treatment demonstrated the most prolonged pain relief relative to the other injection types.
In conclusion, The evidence currently is suggestive that PRP injections provide continued pain relief at upto one-year and beyond post-injection. Corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid have good efficacy and are suitable for many patients but lack this longevity of PRP treatment.
