What is the Clinical Effectiveness of PRP Treatment in Treating Hair Loss?

Platelet-Rich Plasma Effectiveness in Treating Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia): A Comprehensive

Evaluation. February 2025

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a highly potential very utilised tool in regenerative medicine, particularly for its used within musculoskeletal medicine and hair restoration. Its composition encompasses a rich variety of biological components such as platelets, growth factors (GFs), cytokines, and other bioactive proteins. These growth factors work in differentiation of hair follicles, helping to maintain them in the anagen phase. The angiogenic (new blood vessel formation) properties are especially advantageous in hair loss, where reduced blood flow to the scalp contributes to hair follicle miniaturisation and subsequent hair loss. Additionally, PRP can boost overall survival and function of hair follicles.

Androgenetic hair loss (pattern hair loss) is a very common progressive form of hair loss that affects both men and women. This condition is mainly genetic predisposed and the action of androgens, particularly the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT binds to androgen receptors within hair follicles, leading to a progressive miniaturisation of the hair follicle.

The main pharmacological non surgical treatments for pattern hair loss includes minoxidil and finasteride/dutasteride. Whilst local and biological treatments include PRP therapy and autologous micrografting cell treatment. Combining these therapeutic options can provide good benefits. PRP, in particular, stands out due to its safety and minimal side effects.

This recent Peer-reviewed February 2025 Review by Cureus looked to provide a Comprehensive Evaluation Of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Effectiveness in Treating Androgenetic Alopecia reporting the following:

PRP has gained view recognition in regenerative medicine due to its concentration of growth factors that promote hair follicle stimulation, making it a good treatment option for male and female pattern hair loss. This review evaluates the overall effectiveness of PRP in treating hair loss based on the latest reported evidence. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, identifying 156 articles. The studies focused on the efficacy of PRP compared to placebo or other treatments and explored different PRP formulations and application methods. The majority of studies demonstrated that PRP is effective in slowing hair loss, increasing hair density and thickness. Overall, there was a general consensus on the positive effects of PRP and safety. Additionally, combining PRP with other treatments, such as topical medications like minoxidil, showed enhanced efficacy in several studies. The overall evidence over the past decade supports PRP as a promising, natural, effective treatment for male and female pattern hair loss.

This article then went on to conclude that PRP treatment is a good therapeutic option for the treatment of hair loss, particularly for slow progression, increasing hair density and hair thickness.
